While I was in Bangkok for my root canal, another volunteer from Azerbaijan, and I hopped on a train from Bangkok and went to some ancient Buddhist temples in Ayutthaya which used to be the capital of Thailand. These temples date back to the 1300's and Ayutthaya is actually located on a city island. Most of the monasteries are in ruins and were destroyed by the Burmese army in 1767. What mostly remains are headless Buddha statues and temples that have deteriorated.
